Airline operations explained

What is a virtual airline?

A virtual airline brings parts of airline operations into flight simulation. But not every VA follows the same philosophy: some focus on freedom and community, others on realistic procedures or detailed economy and management systems.

First understand what a virtual airline is – then see the approach NordFly takes.

The basics

Why virtual airlines were created.

NordFly aircraft above the clouds at sunset
1

Give flights a purpose

Virtual airlines were created to give flight simulation pilots a shared framework. Instead of isolated flights, each flight becomes part of a connected virtual airline operation.

2

Economy was the original focus

In many early concepts, finance and economy were central: revenue, costs, fleets, bases and progression turned the virtual airline into a management simulation as well.

3

Today there are different concepts

Over time, more virtual airlines were founded with different priorities – such as realism, community, free route choice or shared events. An economy system is now only one of several possible approaches.

Brand & identity

Fictional airline or real-world model?

Virtual airlines differ not only in their rules and systems, but also in which airline identity they represent.

Independent brand

Fully fictional virtual airlines

These VAs create their own name, branding, liveries and usually their own route network. This gives them the freedom to shape their airline operation and concept independently of any real-world carrier.

NordFly belongs to this type of virtual airline.
Real-world model

Virtual airlines using real-airline branding

Other virtual airlines recreate a real-world carrier and operate under its name or branding. Their fleet, liveries, schedules and procedures are often designed to follow the real airline as closely as possible.

They simulate the real airline, but they are not the real-world carrier.
How a VA works

From schedule to virtual logbook.

The exact workflow varies between virtual airlines. Typically, it moves from choosing and planning a flight to tracking it and reviewing the result in a personal logbook.

1

Choose a flight

Book a scheduled route or, if the VA allows it, create a custom flight.

2

Prepare the flight

Plan route, weather, fuel and OFP, often using tools such as SimBrief.

3

Fly & track

Complete the flight in the simulator while an ACARS or tracking client records it.

4

Review

The flight becomes a PIREP in your logbook and may count toward statistics, tours or awards.

Different philosophies

Not every virtual airline works the same way.

There is no mandatory classification for virtual airlines. In practice, however, different priorities are easy to recognize. Many VAs combine more than one approach.

Community-focused

The shared enjoyment of flight simulation comes first. Rules usually cover only what is needed for an organized operation. Route, aircraft and flying style can often be chosen flexibly.

Focus: freedom & community

Realism-focused

Schedules, aircraft types and operational procedures are based on real airline operations. Checklists and SOPs create a believable flight experience without restricting pilots through mandatory training, exams or extensive authorization systems.

Focus: realism & flexibility

Strict realism

Real airline operations are reproduced as faithfully as possible. Mandatory checklists, strict SOPs, flight schools, exams and type ratings are part of everyday operations. Aircraft types, routes or positions may be tied to corresponding qualifications and approvals.

Focus: procedures & qualifications

Economy & management

In addition to flight operations, a virtual airline economy is simulated. Revenue, costs, bases, maintenance, aircraft purchases or unlocks determine the airline's development. Economic decisions can influence which options are available to pilots.

The NordFly concept

Realistic airline structures. Without unnecessary restrictions.

NordFly is a completely fictional virtual airline. From the name and logo to the overall branding and our aircraft liveries, everything is built as its own airline world – with a strong focus on quality, care and attention to detail.

Our concept primarily combines community & freedom with realism & flexibility. NordFly is designed to give flying structure, identity and long-term motivation without unnecessarily restricting the pilot.

Identity

Our own airline world.

  • A completely fictional name, logo and brand identity
  • Dedicated liveries and a consistent airline appearance
  • A high quality standard from simple banners to aircraft liveries
Community

A virtual home for everyone.

  • For VA newcomers, casual pilots, enthusiasts and real-world pilots
  • Group flights, spontaneous shared flights and shared cockpit
  • Community, exchange and a strong sense of belonging
Realism & freedom

Structure – without artificial barriers.

  • SOPs as guidance plus realistically planned summer and winter schedules
  • A relaxed career system: ranks through flight hours, optional course tests
  • No type ratings, no location binding and no aircraft-position binding
Motivation

More variety beyond the individual flight.

  • A detailed pilot profile with personal statistics
  • Destination of the Month, tours, group flights and numerous awards
  • Loyalty, Pilot of the Year, monthly rankings, screenshot contests and passport features
Our principle:As much airline experience and realism as makes sense – as much freedom as possible.
NordFly in detail

What our concept means in everyday flying.

This section is not about NordFly's strategic positioning, but about how the concept actually feels for pilots in day-to-day operations.

Community, spontaneous flights and shared experiences.

  • VA newcomers to real-world pilots
  • Spontaneous group flights
  • Shared cockpit
  • Real-world community meetups

NordFly sees itself as a virtual home for people who enjoy aviation and flight simulation. Whether someone is new to virtual airlines, an after-work pilot, an enthusiast or a real-world pilot: anyone who has mastered the basics is in the right place. From there, experience matters less than the shared passion and the feeling of being part of an active airline community.

Shared flights can happen spontaneously – with two or three pilots or a larger group. Shared-cockpit flying is part of that as well. Exchange, mutual help, group flights and real-world community meetups create a sense of belonging that goes far beyond simply uploading individual flights.

Realism as guidance – not as a barrier.

  • SOPs as guidance

Our rules are limited to what is necessary for an organized operation. Standard Operating Procedures, or SOPs, provide guidance without forcing every step through mandatory training or extensive approval systems.

At the same time, NordFly uses carefully planned summer and winter schedules. Route planning also considers sensible return services so that the network feels like a believable seasonal airline operation. Whether a pilot flies on VATSIM, IVAO, with SayIntentionsAI or completely offline remains an individual choice.

Career, aircraft choice and location freedom.

  • Ranks via flight hours
  • Optional course tests
  • No type ratings
  • No fixed location

The career system is intentionally straightforward: pilots progress through the ranks mainly by accumulating flight hours. Those who want to can enhance individual ranks through small course tests. Mandatory type ratings are not required, so pilots can choose the aircraft from the fleet that they personally prefer.

There is no fixed-location requirement either. A pilot who flies from Hamburg to Dubai today does not have to start the next flight in Dubai. If a favourite aircraft was last used in London, it can still be used for the next desired flight from another airport. The previous flight should not unnecessarily dictate the next one.

Pilot profile, awards and long-term motivation.

  • Pilot profile & statistics
  • Destination of the Month
  • Pilot of the Year
  • Screenshot contest & passport

Every completed flight contributes to a detailed pilot profile with personal statistics. NordFly also creates recurring goals and awards, including monthly Destination of the Month challenges, loyalty awards based on flight hours or membership and the Pilot of the Year award.

Monthly achievements such as most flights, highest flight time, greatest distance and hours flown on IVAO or VATSIM are also highlighted. The screenshot contest, seasonal tours, group-flight awards and a dedicated virtual passport add further variety and long-term motivation without turning NordFly into a complex economy simulation.

Positioning

NordFly – Strategic Direction

NordFly positions itself as an internationally oriented virtual premium network airline that combines the fascination of commercial aviation with modern flight simulation, proprietary technology and a high standard of quality.

Strategically, four themes are central: global connectivity through several hubs, a consistent premium brand, a proprietary digital ecosystem and the long-term development of NordFly as an independent airline identity.

NordFly's premium positioning is not defined by virtual ticket prices or simulated passenger classes, but by the quality of the overall airline experience. Name, logo, brand identity and aircraft liveries form a fully fictional and independent airline identity.

Detailed liveries, custom cabin announcements, high-quality graphics, consistent website areas and carefully developed content are intended to create a coherent overall appearance. Recognition, care and attention to detail are therefore part of the strategic positioning.

Proprietary digital ecosystem and technical independence

NordFly aims to strengthen its position as a high-quality, internationally oriented virtual airline within both the German-speaking and international flight simulation community. Growth is not defined by size alone, but above all by quality, technical development and a consistent airline experience.

The route network, fleet, software and brand presence are therefore developed continuously. The goal is an independent position between a classic community VA and a strictly regulated recreation of a real-world airline: modern, credible, technically ambitious and attractive over the long term.
